It’s true that many elderly folks have trouble doing the Macarena. I’ve never actually seen it happen; at least, not all the way through. One time I was at a disco that had an Elderly Appreciation Evening, where people over sixty were encouraged to come along and have a great time partying it up with the young folks. It was going great, the mix of ages were mingling like there was barely a month between them, but the party kinda died off when it hit nine-thirty and half of them left.
I know you lose energy a bit when you get older, which is why I think that we need to get on the case. Give them a bit of vitality.
There’s caffeine, oxygen therapy, vitamin infusions…and only the middle one of those doesn’t carry risk of heart failure. Places in Melbourne offering portable hyperbaric chambers are getting more numerous at the same time as places offering mixed-aged nightclub experiences, although there does seem to be more of the oxygen thing. Maybe this could be the start of a beautiful partnership, one where hyperbaric medicine is made available to patrons of a nightclub, thus giving them a place to recover and be able to dance the night away.
Not that I want to undermine the importance of oxygen therapy and its role in genuine recovery. I know it’s not designed to help people dance for longer, and I don’t want to transform all Melbourne nightclubs into silly oxygen bars. But in the end…isn’t medical science about improving the quality of our lives? Currently, elderly folks are subject to all kinds of breathing problems that stop them from experiencing life to the full. Offering hyperbaric treatments in Melbourne should be about getting people back on their feet and breathing easy for ALL kinds of great reasons. Maybe…just MAYBE…doing the Macarena without fear of losing your breath midway is one of them? You have to admit, more oxygen is better than everyone chugging down caffeine shots.
