New season of Power Rangers is airing. You’d think they could only do so much with a franchise about park rangers when the show is almost 25 years old, but they just keep moving the seasons to a different nature reserve every time, with new characters. That’s one way to do it, I guess.
I’ve loved the show since I was a kid, and it still has…well, sentimental value. I don’t tell my boyfriend, he’s chosen not to tell me that he still watches My Small Horsie even though I know full-well from his Neat-Flicks history that he’s a huge fan. We all have our vices. Still, I get the feeling watching the newest season that they’re running out of plot ideas. It’s one of two things: a tired plot they’ve done to death about someone conquering their fear or learning the value of teamwork, or…something bizarre. Last night’s episode was all about a dry needling course in New Zealand that all the Rangers went on, because the park manager said it would save their lives one day. That was most of the episode. The rangers learning about dry needling, and then some sort of episodic problem that causes them to have to use their new skills.
I checked online about the production details, and it looked like they’re getting sponsored by the government to promote certain industries to kids. Also, New Zealand is where they do the filming now. Why did I never notice? So yeah, I guess their plots have to be steered in a certain direction if they want to have any kind of special effects budget. It’s just…well, a dry needling course for park rangers? Nothing against dry needling, I just don’t think they worked it into the episode all that well. And here I am, critiquing a show for six-year-olds…
