It’s almost Halloween, and you all know what that means!
Nothing. It really means nothing. I’ve been in Australia for twenty years now, and they still don’t seem all that interested in Halloween like we are in the States. Kinda thought that might have taken off by now. They’re getting *kinda* more into it, with stuff in the stores, but not that much.
Then I guess there’s the fact that I don’t let my kids go trick or treating any more, not since the incident of 2015 where we sent Mrs McCleod to six months of Melbourne’s best oxygen therapy.
That needs clarification, I get it. So there’s a lady down the street, really nice, if kinda frail. I made sure to tell the kids that there are a few houses they shouldn’t visit, but I thought Mrs McLeod would be fine. They knocked on her door dressed up in their zombie costumes, and…she had a minor heart attack that left her with breathing problems. Went to visit her in hospital and she was really sweet about the whole thing, but I just thought we should find her some quality hyperbaric medicine treatments regardless. That night, I pretty much realised that you can’t take a really deeply-rooted tradition and just transplant it somewhere else. At least not without consequences.
I also found out about hyperbaric chambers, which uh…wasn’t the best circumstances for that to happen. But they do seem really popular right now in Melbourne. Hyperbaric therapy, for whatever ails you…including severe palpitations and near-heart failure. I should really look into that sort of thing for if I ever need a bit of time away from the kids. Things can get hectic…it’s a dad thing.
Anyway, I have never been more apologetic than I was that night, trust me. I basically turned Canadian for one night. Maybe we’ll wait a few years for Australia to be ready.
