FINALLY booked myself another gig. This one is at another cafe, totally on the opposite side of town, and even better than that snooty place I was at before. It feels pretty good to be back on the circuit again…or, you know, just ON the circuit, since I never really got properly started.
Anyway, this place is a cafe/restaurant called Peinlich, pretty up-market among the twenty-somethings of Melbourne town. And get this…it’s a FUSION cuisine cafe restaurant! That’s perfect, because my musical style is a fusion between melody and natural sound effects! I think they’re gonna love me, especially after I hit them with the new song I wrote while waiting to get my brakes repaired close to Ringwood. See, unlike your garden variety car servicing, brake repair has a special, subtle sound to it. I wouldn’t have even recognised it at all, except one of the guys mentioned that he was coming in for brake repair, and I thought ‘aha, the moment for which I have waited!’
In keeping with the idea of fusion, I have also fused two themes together in my song, making it a ballad about a woman and a man who desperately want to be together. It is a tale of tragedy because he forgets to have his brakes repaired, they have a crash, she gets amnesia and ends up falling in love with the doctor who was looking after her. It’s a timeless tale of brake repair and broken dreams, which is emphasised by the final two verses being made up of two sounds: the noise of broken brakes, and the noise made by quality brake repair. They represent love, and its many mysteries! Also, it’s a tribute to the car mechanics open in Ringwood who gave me the inspiration. Now…I just need to make sure I have my rainmaker, otherwise the verse with the boy and girl meeting in a thunderstorm is going to be pretty weird and lacking in context.
